This past year, I joined the Rhode Island Math League here at La Salle. Every Monday after school, we meet in Mrs. Misiaszek’s room to practice challenging math problems. Every week, we prepare for the four meets held annually.
A RIML math meet consists of a total of six rounds, five individual rounds, and one team round. For each meet, I participated in three individual rounds and the team round. The questions are difficult, but are extremely rewarding when you get it correct!
In total, there are 37 teams across Rhode Island who participated in the RIML this year. These teams were broken up into seven different “divisions.” La Salle is a part of the Providence Division, which consists of six teams: La Salle, Barrington, Classical, Wheeler, Times Squared Academy, and Mount Pleasant. Although we only compete directly against these six teams, we are, in actuality, competing against the entire state. Since the schools in La Salle’s division are so strong, it is hard to figure out where we stand during the meet itself.
After the four regular-season meets, a team which is in the top one third or finishes in the top of their division gets an invitation to compete in the State Meet. This year, 14 teams were invited to the state meet. In our division, Barrington, Classical, Wheeler, and La Salle are all competing at the state meet, the most teams going from any division.
After finishing in ninth place, La Salle competed at the State Meet on Wednesday, April 12th. A team of 6 students represented La Salle. "Although the problems were quite challenging every one of our students scored at least one perfect round!" - Mrs. Misiaszeck
