The skyrocketing cost of higher education is of great concern to families and the entire nation as student loan debt reaches new heights each year. To combat the many problems this burdensome cost imposes, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo has recently proposed a plan for free college which would be the first in the country if passed. The plan would be to allow students to attend college for two years and earn their associate degree. The plan would allow students to attend public colleges in Rhode Island which would consist of CCRI, RIC, as well as URI. The annual cost of the program will be 30 million dollars if it is passed. At CCRI students could recover free tuition their first two years and at RIC and URI they could recover it there Junior and Senior years of college as long as they hold a certain GPA over the course of the two years. The plan would need to be approved by the state legislature. Furthermore the plan has not been passed yet but it couldn't benefit a large amount of students in Rhode Island who cannot afford to attend college. It is a plan that many students are hopeful will be passed so college is less expensive. If not this plan, then hopefully something changes soon to alleviate the debt burden of young people and families.
