This year the La Salle Academy Book Club decided to give back. At the Book Club’s organizational meeting in September, one of its members suggested that the Book Club should donate books as part of our Christmas meeting. I immediately jumped at the idea.
3 years ago, I donated a bookshelf to the Woonsocket Family Homeless Shelter and filled it with children and young adult books for the residents of the shelter. The children who lived at the shelter were encouraged to take books they enjoy as part of a reading initiative. Therefore, I am always searching for ways to refill the bookshelf.
The influx of donations from the book club was outstanding. In total, the book club donated 46 books, 34 of which were geared for children. This amounts to almost one new book for every child living in the shelter! The books ranged from Amelia Bedelia and The Little Prince to A People’s History of the United States. Furthermore, these books belonged to some of the most enthusiastic readers in the school, so they should help to encourage the next generation of avid readers.
It is amazing how much the bookshelf has grown over the past few years. When it first donated, there were only enough books to fill about half of the shelves. Now, thanks to the donations from the La Salle Book Club and others, the shelf is now overflowing with books.
